St. Mary’s was built in 1967 and opened in 1968. Seamus Folen was principal at the time, followed by Sean Cahill in 1974, Jimmy Casey in 1976 and Pat Finnerty in 1996. Marie Fallon succeeded Pat on his retirement in 2010. Current enrolment is 102 pupils with 4 mainstream teachers and 1 shared learning support teacher with Clondra. The school is located on the outskirts of the Tidy Towns award winning picturesque village overlooking Lough Ree. As well as incorpating curriculum areas, there is a strong tradition of extra-curricular activities in the school.
Pupils are actively involved in Drama, Music and Sport. At our bi-ennial Christmas Concert each classroom performs a play. Classes from third to sixth Classes travel to Roscommon pool for swimming lessons.
Maura Dervin teaches Junior and Senior Infants. First and Second are taught by Sinéad Stenson. Karen Casserly teaches Third and Fourth classes while Marie Fallon teaches Fifth and Sixth classes. Catherine Casserly is our learning support teacher and Gabrielle Walsh is our classroom assistant. Ancillary staff includes Tom Fagan, Fidelma Killian and school secretary Catherine Gallagher. Fr. Merlyn Kenny, P.P. Newtowncashel, is school pastor.
